For some students, the issue is not a lack of ability. The issue may simply be that they learn differently. Maybe academics is not their strength; but they certainly do have their own set of strengths!

This is especially true for young adults with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities, learning differences, executive functioning challenges, ADHD, autism spectrum profiles, or other “invisible disabilities.” These young adults may appear typical on the outside, yet internally struggle significantly with academics, motivation, confidence, emotional regulation, communication, or direction.

Traditional educational environments often emphasize lectures, testing, sitting still, and abstract learning. While that works well for some students, others thrive when learning becomes active, practical, visual, social, and hands-on.

At Dharma Dreams Vocational Center, we believe many young adults are far more capable than traditional systems allow them to show.

What Is a Hands-On Learning Environment?

A hands-on learning environment focuses on learning through action, experience, repetition, and practical application rather than lecture-based instruction alone.

Students may learn through:

vocational training

project-based learning

landscaping and property maintenance

painting and surface preparation

light carpentry and handyman projects

teamwork and real-world problem solving

movement and physical activity

experiential learning

Hands-on vocational programs often help students build confidence because they can see the results of their work immediately and experience real accomplishment.

Signs a Young Adult May Need a Hands-On Learning Environment

1. They Struggle in Traditional Academic Settings. Some young adults simply do not thrive in lecture-heavy or highly academic environments.
You may notice:

difficulty staying engaged in class

frustration with worksheets or testing

poor motivation in school

anxiety around academics

feeling overwhelmed by traditional learning methods

This does not necessarily mean a student lacks their own kind of intelligence. Many students have strengths that are not fully recognized in traditional classrooms.

2. They Learn Better by Doing. Some young adults understand concepts much more effectively when they can physically participate in the learning process.
For example:

building something

using tools

working outdoors

practicing skills repeatedly

seeing visual or physical results

These students may retain information far better through real-world application than through reading or lectures alone.

3. They Have Strong Practical or Visual Skills. Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences suggests that intelligence exists in many forms, not just academic or linguistic ability.
Some young adults may have strengths in:

bodily-kinesthetic intelligence

visual-spatial intelligence

interpersonal intelligence

practical problem-solving

mechanical understanding

creative thinking

Traditional schools often reward only a narrow range of abilities. As a result, students with strong hands-on or practical skills may begin to believe they are “bad at learning” when they actually learn differently.

4. They Feel Stuck, Unmotivated, or Lacking Direction. Many parents describe their young adult as:

capable but stuck

unsure of what comes next

disconnected from school or work

spending too much time isolated or inactive

This often happens when a young adult has not yet found an environment where they can experience success and confidence.

Hands-on vocational training can help create momentum by giving students:

meaningful responsibilities

visible accomplishments

structure and routine

opportunities to contribute

5. Confidence Has Been Damaged by Repeated Struggles.
Many young adults with cognitive, learning, or invisible disabilities experience years of frustration, discouragement, and feeling left behind.

Even within supportive special education environments, students may become discouraged when:

the work feels repetitive year after year

expectations remain limited

they feel underestimated

they compare themselves to peers who appear to be progressing more quickly toward independence, college, careers, or adulthood

Over time, many students begin internalizing the belief that they are:

behind

incapable

different in a negative way

not moving forward in life

They may hear messages such as:

You just need to try harder

You are smart, so why are you struggling?

You seem fine

Maybe this just isn’t for you

You need more support than others

Let someone else handle that

Even when well-intentioned, repeated experiences of struggle, limitation, or comparison can significantly impact confidence, motivation, and self-worth.

Many young adults are not lacking ability. They may simply need:

a different learning environment

more meaningful opportunities

practical, hands-on experiences

real responsibility

the chance to build confidence through accomplishment rather than constant evaluation

A supportive vocational environment can help students begin seeing themselves differently, not through the lens of limitation, but through capability, growth, and progress.

7. They Need Opportunities to Build Independence. Many families worry about:

what happens after age 22

employment opportunities

long-term independence

social isolation

lack of confidence

A hands-on vocational program can help students begin developing:

practical life skills

workplace habits

emotional regulation

social confidence

greater independence

Students often benefit from being surrounded by peers with similar interests, challenges, and goals while working together in a supportive environment.

Invisible Disabilities and Unseen Potential

Many young adults live with invisible disabilities. Their struggles may not always be immediately obvious to others, yet the impact on daily life can be significant.

While a disability may be described clinically as “moderate,” the emotional and practical challenges may feel much greater than moderate for both the student and their family.

Traditional systems often focus heavily on weaknesses, deficits, and what students are not doing well. At Dharma Dreams Vocational Center, we believe strengths deserve equal attention.
Some students are not failing. They are simply not being reached.

Confidence Through Accomplishment.

One of the most important aspects of a hands-on vocational program is that confidence grows through doing.

Students begin building confidence when they:

complete projects

contribute to a team

solve real problems

use tools and equipment safely

create visible results

experience success consistently

This type of learning can help young adults begin seeing themselves differently, not as incapable, but as individuals with strengths, value, and potential.

Finding the Right Environment Matters.

Not every young adult thrives in the same environment. He has spent decades trying different paths, working hard, and doing what he was told would lead to success. Yet he is still asking a simple, powerful question:
Is there something out there for me?

That question stays with you.

Not because it is rare, but because it is far too common.

There are so many individuals who move through childhood and young adulthood without the right support, the right guidance, or the right environment to succeed. They are capable. They are willing. But the systems around them often do not meet them where they are.

And before anyone realizes it, years have passed. Confidence is worn down. Hope becomes harder to hold onto. And what should have been a journey of growth becomes a long search just to find a place to belong.

This is exactly why Dharma Dreams Vocational Center exists.

We Cannot Wait Until It Is Too Late. What if we could step in earlier?
What if we could recognize that some young adults learn differently, process differently, and need a different kind of path?

What if instead of trying to fit them into a system that was never designed for them, we built something that actually works for them?

Because when we do not, we risk leaving people behind. Not intentionally, but systematically. And those young adults grow into older adults who are still searching for their shot.

Trades Create More Than Skills. They Create Purpose. There is something powerful about working with your hands. About seeing a problem and fixing it. About completing a task and knowing, "I did that."

Trades offer:

structure

repetition

tangible outcomes

and most importantly, confidence

Whether it is landscaping, painting, maintenance, or even something like locksmithing (which this gentleman was asking about), these are not just jobs. They are pathways to independence and pride.

For many individuals, especially those who struggle in traditional academic environments, trades are not a backup plan. They are the right plan.......Expanding What Is Possible.

When we hear someone express interest in something like locksmithing, it opens the door to an important question:

How can we create more pathways like this?

How can we offer programs that are:

hands-on

structured

supportive

and aligned with how people actually learn

Maybe that means exploring new trades. Maybe it means building programs that focus on repetition, confidence, and real-world application. Maybe it means partnering with local businesses to create opportunities that feel attainable.

We do not need to have every answer today. But we do need to keep asking better questions. How Can We Guide and Support People Better? This is the heart of the work.

Guidance is not just about telling someone what to do. It is about helping them discover what works for them. Support is not just about getting someone a job. It is about helping them keep it, grow in it, and feel successful in it.

We can do better by:

meeting people where they are

building confidence alongside skill

creating environments where mistakes are part of learning

and offering ongoing support, not just placement

You Are Enough, Exactly As You Are. At the core of everything is this truth:
No one is broken. Some people simply have not been given the right tools, the right environment, or the right opportunities yet.

Everyone deserves to feel capable. Everyone deserves to feel proud of what they can do. Everyone deserves a chance to contribute and to belong.
And most importantly, everyone deserves that chance sooner rather than later.

Our Commitment At Dharma Dreams Vocational Center - we are committed to creating those opportunities. To building programs that make sense. To helping young adults gain skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose.

Because the goal is not just employment.
The goal is a life that feels meaningful.
And a future where no one has to spend decades wondering if they will ever get their shot.

Learning With Joy: A Better Classroom Experience for Students

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/joyful-learning-better-classroom-experience

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/joyful-learning-better-classroom-experience#comments

Uncategorized

Are you tired of the stressed out, boring classes you have been attending? That is why compassion is so important at Dharma Dreams Vocational Center.

So, when I see a principal or teacher that brings new methods, compassion and fun to learning, I take notice. Have you heard of the principal at Lucy Laney? I think you should!

Check out "Love Them First"

Find out about the principal making a difference here: https://www.lovethemfirst.com

The following is the director's statement from that site:

"We first met Lucy Laney principal Mauri Melander Friestleben through our work as daily news journalists on assignment, covering two violent incidents outside the doors of her school – an officer involved shooting of a black man, and several months later, a drive-by shooting that took the life of a two-year-old child.

We instantly recognized the power in her voice as a fierce protector, disruptor and overcomer. Friestleben didn't try to diminish her students' fears. She spoke with a surprising honesty and unrelenting love that stayed with us. We sensed as a principal, she carried her own story into that school every morning, and when we followed our instincts as storytellers, the "Love Them First" documentary was born.

Before we began filming, we set an intent to listen and to understand. As white, privileged journalists, we knew there would be deserved skepticism of our motivations. Are we here to pity? Are we here to sensationalize? To get a story and disappear? The school and students had long suffered under the unforgiving headline of "failing" school in the epicenter of a high-poverty neighborhood.

Our project first began tentatively as series of stories on KARE 11 News, a test of trust for Friestleben, Lucy Laney staff and the Minneapolis school district. We slowly gained unprecedented access to the daily life at the school, diving into issues like dialect and discipline, or sharing light-hearted moments, like the school's annual basketball game or picture day.

Over the course of one year, several dozens news stories unfolded into our documentary film, as Ben shot hundreds of hours of footage. Each day he carefully lowered his cameras down to meet the eyes of the children brave enough to talk with a stranger, hoping to lift their voices up to the larger world.

When Lindsey crafted the interviews and footage into a storyline, she abandoned her usual "voiceover" as a reporter, allowing the children's voices and Friestleben's own narration to become the vessel for the victories and setbacks inside the school.

As first-time documentarians, our film is now complete, but the real work has hardly begun. Minnesota struggles with the largest achievement gap between black and white students in the nation, but every community has a failing school. The racial education gap is now a defining 21st century challenge as whites make up less than half of America's K-12 students.

We hope by opening up a window into a world few often see, our audience will think more critically about the inequities and injustices students of color contend with in classrooms every day, especially when it comes to standardized testing, the nation's yardstick for measuring underperforming schools.

Friestleben once told us, "If you are in this work, you are in it to change the world."

Whether the film leaves you with crucial questions, a new perspective, or the inspiration to volunteer, tutor or teach, our greatest desire is that Love Them First leaves a mark on your heart.

We hope you will see Lucy Laney's children-- or the kids in a school across your town—as all of our children, who deserve the same opportunities to learn, no matter the zip code, test score or lasting label."

Ben Garvin and Lindsey Seavert

A Mother's Vision for Special Needs Vocational Training

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/mothers-vision-special-needs-vocational-training

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/mothers-vision-special-needs-vocational-training#comments

Uncategorized

Dharma Dreams Vocational Center: How This Vision For A Special Needs Program Came To Be You know your child better than anyone. No school, no doctor, not anyone knows him or her better. I think we, as parents, all have intuitive knowledge about our kids no matter what the grades are and no matter what the diagnosis is. And I know, for all of them, that they have a lot to offer this world!

So, for my son, it was as early as preschool that a teacher figured out he is different from the rest. So, the journey began. We did the core evaluation through the school which showed those areas where a learning disability exists. Then, the speech and language therapy started; and the therapist actually thought she had “solved the problem” (after just months of work) and was ready to release him from services. But the reality is, we continued many services all the way through high school and beyond, because he needed support.

Traditional academic programs were not for my son. In fact, it was just the opposite. It was like trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. It never fit. You, as a parent know, that when this happens, the stress, frustration and anger begin to manifest. And that is not fun for anyone! So, in my humble opinion, something needs to change.

We were lucky enough to be in the Town of Braintree which has many programs to offer. So, we pretty much tried them all but still, the square peg in a round hole. We met a lot of nice teachers along the way; but truthfully, changing a program was out of their hands. Plus, on top of it, they are quite busy. I am thankful for all teachers; and I am especially thankful for those willing to give their time to my son and students like him.

Like most people in the world, my son is unique. He is a kid with a big heart, a kind soul, and quite a few challenges when it comes to academics.

Outside of school, though, my son was the kid who was always outdoors having fun. And fun, came in many ways, because he is also a worker. From a young age, he was the kid who would sit outside for hours at a lemonade stand to make money Because he also loves money lol! And who doesn’t?

Eventually he started selling shell figures at his table and as he got older, he created his own lawn mowing business. He also helped around our house and the neighbors with the snow blowing. He tinkered with ATV’s and motors to refurbish them, and more. As you can see, he liked to keep busy and learn how to do new things to make money. His entrepreneurial skills have been building for a while.

Inside as a kid, he would vacuum and clean and do great work. He even used to clean his brother’s room so that his brother would not get in trouble. Of course, some of this changed when he got into those teenage years and older - the rooms are not as clean but you get the point!

My son has a lot to offer and he does not need the academics to make it happen!

The problem with the traditional vocational schools is that they require the academics which would have created a lot of stress. So, he could never go there to learn the job skills he would have liked to learn; and as much as I pushed the school system to do more, it never happened. And I know there are plenty of special needs students that fall into the same category. They are capable of a lot more and just did not have the opportunity. This is exactly why vocational education for special needs students is so critically needed and so rarely done right.

Well, I decided I want to give them that opportunity. So, the idea of Dharma Dreams Vocational Center is born. Dharma Dreams Vocational Center is an amazing place built to serve a wide variety of special needs and cognitive disabilities. Without traditional academic classes, we are able to offer job skills and career skills to help these students pursue their dreams.

We also offer holistic ways to keep their minds and bodies centered for a more relaxed and anxiety-free approach. Like many parents, I have been a strong advocate for my child throughout all his schooling years. In this role, I explored many opportunities and programs for special needs students, hoping to find the right fit for my son. Unfortunately, none truly met his needs. Like many parents, I felt we were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It was heartbreaking to watch his frustration and feel powerless to help. I tried to get the schools to adopt programs to teach real hands on job skills; but nothing ever came to fruition. So, it may have taken longer than I would have liked, but eventually the idea of Dharma Dreams Vocational Center was born.

My son has always been a hard worker and has always loved to tinker. He likes to build things. He also likes to take them apart. He is a good kid with so many positive qualities - he has a good heart; he loves the outdoors; he loves to help people and thinks of what they need; he likes to try new things. He likes so many things; and yet, he never liked school. Academics was hard for him and very frustrating. Although the academics are necessary to learn, I knew there had to be more for him. He is a visual, hands-on learner.

I wish either my husband or I were the right people to teach him the skills he needs, but we are not. We are not skilled in the trades. He did have some friends who taught him things, but he needed more. I tried to get private lessons, but there were not many available. So, although I could not always find the tutors or skilled trades people to help him learn more, I knew there had to be a way.

People asked about the current technical schools. Although those schools are open to everyone, it truly was not realistic for my son because he could not suffer through the academics. So, although Dharma Dreams Vocational Center will have to offer guidance on academic skills such as measurements or chemical interactions, it will not be done through the traditional academic class. The approach will be more hands on and visual, as well as repetitive to help it sink in. We will do what it takes to help you or your student learn.

In the end, our hope is for the students to learn skills of proficiency that they can take into the work world with great confidence. Our hope is to give our students more skills to be as independent as possible. Our dream is to help you achieve your dream!

Athletics & Physical Engagement

Although we are not a school that competes against other schools, we are happy to get our students outdoors for activities; and if they are interested, we an connect them with special olympics or other adult sports.

Activism & Self-Advocacy Skills

How would you like to get involved? This approach prioritizes the use of native plants, efficient water use, and environmentally friendly materials. It’s about creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces that work in harmony with the natural environment.

Why is Sustainable Landscaping Gaining Popularity?

Environmental Awareness: As climate change continues to be a pressing global issue, more homeowners and businesses are seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainable landscaping offers a tangible way to contribute to environmental conservation by reducing water use, minimizing chemical inputs, and supporting local ecosystems.

Cost Efficiency: While the initial investment in sustainable landscaping practices might be higher, the long-term savings are substantial. Native plants typically require less water and maintenance, reducing the need for irrigation and fertilizers. Over time, this translates to lower utility bills and maintenance costs.

Aesthetic Appeal: Sustainable landscaping is not just functional—it’s beautiful. The use of native plants and natural materials creates a landscape that is in tune with the local environment, offering a sense of place and belonging. Moreover, sustainable designs often incorporate innovative features like rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavements, which add visual interest and unique character to a property.

Health Benefits: Reducing the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in landscaping practices contributes to healthier soil, cleaner air, and safer environments for people and wildlife. This shift towards eco-friendly practices also promotes the well-being of those working in the landscaping industry, who are less exposed to harmful chemicals.

Key Elements of Sustainable Landscaping

Native Plants: Using plants that are native to the area is a cornerstone of sustainable landscaping. Native plants are adapted to the local climate, soil, and wildlife, making them more resilient and easier to maintain.

Water Conservation: Sustainable landscapes often feature drought-tolerant plants, efficient irrigation systems, and rainwater harvesting techniques. These practices help conserve water, an increasingly valuable resource.

Soil Health: Healthy soil is the foundation of a sustainable landscape. Practices such as composting, mulching, and reducing chemical inputs help maintain and improve soil quality, which in turn supports plant health.

Energy Efficiency: By strategically planting trees and shrubs, sustainable landscaping can help reduce energy use in buildings by providing natural shade and windbreaks. This reduces the need for heating and cooling, further lowering the environmental impact.

The Future of Sustainable Landscaping

As the demand for eco-friendly solutions continues to grow, the landscape industry is poised to lead the way in sustainable practices. Professionals in the field are increasingly incorporating sustainable techniques into their projects, whether it’s through the design of new landscapes or the retrofitting of existing ones.

For those considering a career in landscaping, this trend offers exciting opportunities. Landscaping certificate courses provide the skills and knowledge needed to implement sustainable practices, making them a highly valued investment and a rewarding, future-proof career choice.

WHY SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING MATTERS

Sustainable landscaping is more than just a trend—it's a movement towards a more responsible and thoughtful approach to working with the land. As awareness of environmental issues continues to rise, the demand for sustainable practices in landscaping will only increase. For both professionals and homeowners, embracing this trend is a step towards a healthier, more sustainable future.

Joining Forces with Profound: A New Chapter in Disability Empowerment

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/joining-forces-with-profound-a-new-chapter-in-disability-empowerment

https://www.dharmadreamsvocationalcenter.org/blog/joining-forces-with-profound-a-new-chapter-in-disability-empowerment#comments

Uncategorized

Making A Difference In The Disability Community Making A Difference In The Disability Community I am thrilled to announce that I, Joanne Burke-Sherman, founder of Dharma Dreams Vocational Center, am now a proud member of the dynamic networking group, Profound.
